Business management system comparison: Horizon, Odoo and Standard ERP
Share with others
Choose a business management system around your company's most important operational needs. Assess Horizon first for accounting, payroll, personnel and inventory records. Consider Odoo for customer and project work in a shared suite of business applications. Evaluate Standard ERP for managing orders, inventory and job costs. A product name alone does not confirm that the proposed configuration includes everything your business needs.
Contents
ERP is a system for managing a company's resources and operations. The product order in this comparison is not a ranking of superiority. VIZUAL is discussed separately as a tailored software development service for cases where important requirements justify a custom solution, not as a fourth packaged product.
Comparison criteria
Assess all three products against the same five criteria. Distinguish a feature appearing in a product catalogue from its inclusion in your selected configuration and its readiness for everyday use.
- Everyday work coverage. Can the team manage customers, projects, tasks and required documents without substantial additional work outside the system?
- Essential functions. Which configuration provides the accounting, payroll, inventory or other records your business needs?
- Implementation. Who will prepare and migrate data, configure the system and train employees?
- Customization and connections. Which requirements do standard features meet, where are additions needed, and how will the system work with existing software?
- Cost components. Compare initial work, recurring charges and future changes separately.
Request proposals covering the same number of users, functions and period of use. If one proposal includes data migration and training while another leaves them unspecified, the price comparison is not yet complete.
| Solution and type | When to consider it | Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Horizon, product | Accounting and operational records are the priority | Accounting, payroll, personnel and inventory records in the core system | Full project management coverage and integration conditions need clarification |
| Odoo, product | Customer and project work in a shared application suite | CRM and project applications with tasks and documents | The Standard plan does not support custom-developed modules |
| Standard ERP, product | Order, inventory and job cost management | Accounting, order, inventory and job costing functions | Country-specific configuration and required connections need confirmation |
| VIZUAL, development service | Important operational requirements justify a tailored system | Needs discovery, an adaptable foundation and agreed ongoing development | Not a packaged ERP product, with the functional scope agreed separately |
1. Horizon
Best for: evaluation by businesses that prioritize accounting, payroll, personnel and inventory records. If these functions are the main reason for buying, start the demonstration with them, then check the wider team's operational needs.
Strength: Horizon's core system includes accounting, payroll, personnel and inventory records. Additional functional packages include invoice approval and business process features. Configurations are described on the Horizon features and pricing page.
Limitation: add-on capabilities are not automatically core-system capabilities. In a demonstration, check customer information, project deadlines, task ownership and work-related documents separately. Do not treat project time tracking as proof of full project management coverage.
Implementation and support are provided by Visma Enterprise or distribution partners. Ask for data migration, training and future changes to be specified in the proposal rather than assuming they are included in the subscription.
Connections to other business systems require a subscription tier with the integration platform. Each partner sets the terms and costs for its own solutions. These conditions are explained in the Horizon integration FAQs.
Horizon subscription fees depend on concurrent user numbers, employee numbers and functionality. Subscription and service terms are described in the Horizon pricing FAQs. Request separate costs for initial work and additions ordered later. Before signing, check the current terms for your selected configuration.
2. Odoo
Best for: evaluation by businesses seeking to combine customer and project work with other business functions in a shared application suite. It is worth considering when the decision involves sales and delivery teams as well as accounting.
Strength: Odoo offers customer relationship management, or CRM, accounting, inventory and project applications. Its project offering describes task, milestone and document management. Milestones are significant project stages used to assess progress.
Limitation: Odoo Standard runs on Odoo Online and does not support custom-developed modules. Modules are additions to the system. Standard allows certain built-in connections, while Custom provides additional customization and access options for external systems. Applications and plan differences are described in the Odoo plan comparison. Clarify your specific connections and customizations before choosing a plan, rather than judging it only by the application list.
Check the Odoo 20.0 accounting localization list for the required market. A localization provides country-specific adaptations, but accounts, taxes and reports still need configuration. This requirement is explained in the Odoo 20.0 accounting localization documentation. Assess payroll separately and request a demonstration of the reports your business needs in the selected version.
Odoo's implementation service description covers needs analysis, configuration, data import, user training and workflow adaptation. These activities are described in the Odoo implementation service offering. Agree which tasks the supplier will handle and which belong to your team.
The subscription does not automatically include implementation, custom code maintenance or hosting on Odoo.sh. These exclusions appear in the Odoo subscription terms. If your chosen solution requires this work or hosting, ask for it to be listed separately in the proposal. Also clarify how later changes will be assessed and charged.
3. Standard ERP
Best for: evaluation by businesses that need to manage orders, inventory and job costs together. Start the demonstration with the connections between these processes, then check the everyday work of customer-facing and project teams.
Strength: Standard ERP's description includes accounting, order, inventory, manufacturing and job costing functions, alongside customer management, documents and calendars. The system can be customized to business needs. Its functions are described on the HansaWorld Standard ERP product page.
Limitation: the country-specific configuration and coverage of essential business functions need separate confirmation. Do not equate job costing with managing project deadlines and task ownership. Also ask to see how documents are found under the relevant customer or job.
Customizability alone does not mean a connection to your existing software is already available. Name the applications you intend to keep and request a clear answer about the connections required.
Ask for data migration, training and implementation work to be described separately. Clarify initial and recurring charges, along with how future changes will be priced. Only then compare the proposal with Horizon and Odoo for the same scope of work.
VIZUAL
VIZUAL is a development partner for software tailored to business needs, not a seller of a standalone packaged CRM or ERP product. Consider this approach when important customer, project, task or document management requirements justify custom development, for example when evaluating packaged products leaves significant gaps.
The collaboration starts with an assessment of business processes and needs. Together, the business and VIZUAL identify necessary and unnecessary functions and agree the first version's scope. VIZUAL uses an existing, adaptable data-management foundation, so the shared base does not need to be built from scratch for every project. Business-specific functionality is added to that foundation.
The scope of business management and ERP system development depends on specific needs. Do not assume accounting, inventory or manufacturing functions are automatically included. Data migration, training and connections also need separate assessment and agreement.
Pricing depends on the agreed scope of work. The adaptable foundation does not guarantee lower total costs than a packaged product. After implementation, VIZUAL continues the collaboration and adapts the system to actual operations and new needs, with further improvements agreed with the business.
Conclusion
Start evaluating Horizon with accounting and record-keeping needs, Odoo with customer and project work in a shared application suite, and Standard ERP with order, inventory and job cost management. Base the final choice on the specific configuration, confirmation of essential business functions and a complete implementation proposal.
Illustrative example: a business sells goods and provides installation services. Ask each supplier to demonstrate the same order, covering customer information, stock availability, the work task, related documents and a cost report. Record what the proposed configuration can handle, what needs customization and what remains in another application. This helps compare solutions by the work they can support rather than the impression a demonstration creates.
If important operational requirements justify a tailored customer, project, task and document management system with ongoing development, consider VIZUAL's development approach. Discuss the required functions and first-version scope with VIZUAL to establish whether custom development fits your business needs.
